De leden van de Nederlandse dansbare jazz-formatie The Jazzinvaders (bekend van het televisiespotje voor Radio 6!) zijn amper de studio uit voor het afronden van hun nieuwe album 'Blow!' of ze staan alweer te trappelen om de podia en festivals te bestormen met hun aanstekelijke hippe mix van jazz, afro en latin grooves.

De groep is enkele jaren geleden in jazzmekka het Bimhuis in Amsterdam ontstaan uit een incidentele samenwerking tussen DJ, drummer en producer Phil Martin en de kopersectie van hardbop-groep De Houdini's. De geslaagde samensmelting van hun strakke blaaspartijen met de beats en grooves van de producer maakte iets los dat niet meer te stoppen was. Al snel was de eerste 12", 'Go Ahead', een feit. Die bleek later nog maar een voorproefje van wat in het vat zat. Het in 2006 verschenen debuutalbum 'Up & Out' bracht de Nederlandse muzikanten instant succes tot in Japan, waar in allerijl getourd werd nadat er duizenden cd's over de toonbank waren gegaan. 2008 wordt het jaar van 'de opvolger'.

Het nieuwe album 'Blow!' staat als bloesem op uitkomen. En vrucht afwerpen gaat het zeker! De associatieve mix-up van verschillende roots-stijlen, al jaren het ding bij uitstek van Phil Martin, streelt het oor van elk menselijk wezen dat muziek essentieel acht in zijn of haar leven. Of die muziek nu gebruikt wordt om op te dansen, om bij te werken of om de dag uit te luiden: 'Blow!' voelt goed aan. Het nieuwe album huisvest behalve de vaste leden van The Jazzinvaders gastmuzikanten zoals gitarist Eddie Roberts (New Mastersounds), de Nederlandse zanger Frank Montis en de Italiaanse vocaliste Stefania Dipierro (Nicola Conte).

Op het podium spreken The Jazzinvaders de universele taal van de dansbare muziek. Er wordt geïmproviseerd dat het een lust is, maar de beats, strakke blaaspartijen en verrassende stijlcombinaties houden ook de niet-zo-jazzliefhebbers bij de les. The Jazzinvaders speelden zoals gezegd in Japan maar waren daarnaast o.a. te zien en te horen op The Hague Jazz, North Sea Jazz Festival, The Jazzcafe in London. Ze staan nu weer te trappelen en zijn klaar voor het nieuwe seizoen!

Quotes This is the second album from this great Dutch group and on the ever-consistent label 'Social Beats' (also Dutch), who, currently, can do no wrong. Let's make no bones about it, this album is aimed straight at the dancefloor and hit's the bullseye. Dj's with no patience will get frustrated because there are so many tracks one could play (Day By Day; Perugia; Max Roach; Broad Minds and the funky 'What The Bleep') but it's also varied enough, tempo and style-wise, to suit the home-listener too. As you'd expect from the Dutch - with their great jazz heritage, the musicianship is outstanding, but there must be a special mention of the singer Linda Bloemhard, who shines throughout the album. - 8 out of 10 - deejay Snowboy

The Jazzinvaders project is a collaboration between producer/percussionist Phil Martin and members of famous Dutch jazz outfit The Houdini's. Rejecting the producer-centric abstractions of the nu-jazz/broken beat set, 'Up & Out' is a groove-centred attempt at updating the classic latin and jazz-funk sounds of the 1960s and 1970s for the 21st century. This is a band with their sights set firmly on the dancefloor. Opener 'Bonga Bonga Jazz' sets the tone - a propulsive concoction of Latin riffs and funky horn stabs driven forward by an elastic monster of a bassline. Elsewhere there are nods to the pioneering fusions of Fela Kuti and the Jazzanova crew as well as some lovely vocal turns from Mette Burild and Linda Bloemhard. But for all its infectious vitality and the nods to recent dancefloor trends, 'Up & Out' remains a very retro affair that throws up no real surprises. Luckily what the set lacks in invention it more than makes up for in sheer exuberance - a welcome reminder of just how funky jazz can be. Chris Pile - Fly Magazine
