The Music
Many different musical influences put together to form a unique blend of spices. Take some latin, add a little jazz, mix it with rock, let it cook in a spanish paella, add a pinch of eastern, shake it all up in the groover and; you got yourself a good share of the funky WazabE…
While permanently based in Amsterdam, WazabE keeps no borders and sees no borders. As easily as international musicians and styles melt into the WazabE-line up, the group shares its music with audiences in the Netherlands France, Austria and Portugal. WazabE will give you a blast whenever and wherever, so… just join in and enjoy the flavour!
The Band
Philippe Lemm - Drums
The very talented Philippe Lemm, born in Amsterdam in 1985, got a guitar for his 16th birthday. After two weeks he decided to exchange it for a drumset and the man and his instrument have been inseparable ever since. He attended the Amsterdam Conservatory and studied with Joost Lijbaard, Marcel Serierse, Victor Oskam, Enrique Fripi and Gerhard Jeltes. He made numerous bands catch the groove, like, among others, the Parker Trio, the Saskia Laroo Band, theater company Jetje en haar dansorkest and of course the infamous musical formation WazabE.
Pepi Unterberger - Bass
Originally born and raised in Tirol, Austria, Pepi picked up the bass at the age of 16 in high school. He taught it himself by listening and playing his favourite tunes, for a period of time he concentrated on electronical means of musical expression, but he found his way back to bass playing in the music scene of Innsbruck, where he was part of several fusion- and jazz-funk projects. After attending the bass school in Munich for half a year, he went to study at Innsbruck's conservatory for a year, and eventually became a Jazz student at the conservatory of Amsterdam. You can hear him play with formations like WazabE, Sun Solution, SAP...!?, Suspicious White Powder, Sophie, Monkey Tree and P3
Fernando Britzmann Stern, A.K.A. Nano – Guitars and Voice
Nano (20) was born in Santiago de Chile. At the early age of 3 he started studying the violin. After contributing some licks to a couple of bands, he joined Mattoral in 2000. After graduating from high school, he started studying composition, broadened his skills with singing and playing guitar and bass, and produced a number of recordings. In 2004 he said goodbye to the Chilean sun to start a solo career in Germany (where else?), resulting in some concerts and a lot of music writing. He found himself collaborating in projects such as the documentary Oro Verde and worked together with Tato Gomez, assisting him in the recording studio. In 2005 he was admitted to the Jazz department of the Amsterdam Conservatory where he encountered the other members of the WazabE crew.
Andreas Böhlen - Saxophone
Born in 1983, in Würzburg, Germany, Andreas Böhlen first became a virtuoso performer on the recorder-flute, gaining him both national and international prizes. His passion for a modern, highly grooving sound however led him onto spending some of his musical breath on the saxophone reed. But still, influences from early baroque to modern classics emerge from his horn, providing him with a higly authentic sound. His performances include some world-premieres of modern classic compositions, and appearances for German broadcasting networks. And of course, teaming up with Michael in the horn section, all his inner diversity coexists in an amazing and expressive contribution to the indescribable flavour of WazabE
Michael Rörby - Trombone
Trombonist Michael Rörby was born in Stockholm, Sweden, 1969. Being the third son of the lute- and guitar player Jörgen Rörby, he grew up surrounded by music. He became master of fine arts in music in Stockholm and graduated with honours, cum laude, as a post-doc at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. His unique sound and innovative style are by now known from Italy to England, from Belgium to Hungary, and through his work for TV and Radio, probably everywhere else as well. He played with bands like the New Cool Collective and Tetzepi, with his Michael Rörby Quartet (MRQ) and participated in many other formations covering all styles of music.
